A New Chapter: Our Expansion Into Charleston

The Addison Group’s expansion into Charleston, South Carolina, is more than a move into a new market. For owner Daniel Woods, it’s an opportunity to become part of a community with its own distinct character, culture, and pace of life.

What led The Addison Group to Charleston?

The Charleston expansion really started with our team. One of our employees moved to the area, which gave us an opportunity to begin looking at Charleston in a different way.

As we spent more time there, we started to see how much potential there was. We weren’t just looking at it as another market. We were getting to know the people, the communities, and the region. Over the course of about a year, we really fell in love with the city and began to see how our landscape architecture expertise could contribute to the area.

What makes Charleston special to you?

There’s a charm to Charleston that is difficult to duplicate. There’s so much history, but it’s not a city that feels stuck in the past. There’s a real sense of pride in the community and in the culture.

I also appreciate the pace of life. People are hardworking and focused, but there’s also an appreciation for slowing down and enjoying life. Food, culture, restaurants, the outdoors—it’s all part of the experience. There’s a great eclectic mix to Charleston that gives it a personality of its own.

How would you compare Charleston with Nashville?

There are definitely similarities. Both are communities where people work hard, take pride in where they live, and care about their neighborhoods. But there’s a different pace in Charleston.

Nashville has grown tremendously, and there’s a real energy and momentum there. Charleston has that same sense of growth and opportunity, but there’s also a stronger emphasis on enjoying the lifestyle and appreciating the character of the place.

I think both communities have a strong sense of identity, and that’s something we really value.

You’ve had the opportunity to explore different communities around Charleston. What have you noticed?

One of the things I appreciate most is how different each community feels. From downtown Charleston to Mount Pleasant, Sullivan’s Island, and Daniel Island, each area has its own character.

That’s exciting from a landscape architecture perspective because you’re not approaching every project the same way. The setting, the history, the people, and the way a community lives all matter. We’ve enjoyed learning what makes each area unique and understanding the region beyond just the city itself.

One of the best ways to experience Charleston is through its gardens. We enjoy exploring the landscapes that reflect the region’s history, character, and relaxed pace.

This is a garden that caught our attention during our time in Charleston, offering a glimpse of the beauty and distinct personality of the region.

What are you most excited about as The Addison Group begins this next chapter?

We’re very busy in Nashville and continue to have a lot of exciting work happening there, so Charleston is really an opportunity to build on what we’ve already established rather than shift our focus.

I’m excited about becoming part of the Charleston community and continuing to learn. We want to bring the same level of expertise and care that has been important to us in Nashville while also understanding what makes the Charleston area unique.

For us, expansion isn’t simply about entering a new market. It’s about building relationships, becoming part of a community, and doing work that responds to the place we’re in.

Charleston has its own identity, and we’re excited to be part of what comes next.
